Jean-Luc ORMIERES shares his time between his activities as European freelance consultant and his Production Company, OF2B PRODUCTIONS, dedicated to Independent Feature Film production in France and Europe.
He has produced over 30 feature films as of today. Ormieres established his reputation as a truly independent European filmmaker with his first feature, Rue Cases Negres (Sugarcane Alley), on which he served as producer and line producer. After winning a Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the film went on to be honoured with the 1984 French Cesar for Best First Feature Film. The worldwide career of the film established director EUZHAN PALCY.
In 1988, he was represented by two films at the Cannes Film Festival: Peaux de Vaches, directed by PATRICIA MAZUY, which went on to be nominated for a Cesar, and Chine, Ma Douleur (China, My Sorrow), directed by DAI SIJIE, which subsequently won the Prix Jean Vigo and a special award at the Locarno Festival. The following year, Ormieres returned to Cannes as producer of La Captive du Desert, directed by RAYMOND DEPARDON and starring Sandrine Bonnaire, featuring in the Festival's Official Selection .
In 1992, Ormieres co-produced Belgium's Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, Daens, directed by STIJN CONINX. The epic historical biography was also honoured with a special award at the 1992 Venice Film Festival. In the same year, he co-produced another Belgian film, Je pense a vous, with LUC et JEAN-PIERRE DARDENNE, who were later to be honoured with two Golden Palms (Rosetta, and L'Enfant).
His next film was the critically acclaimed black and white feature film, Moi Ivan, toi Abraham, written and directed by YOLANDE ZAUBERMAN, which won Best Film at the 1993 Edition of the Moscow International Film Festival.
His contribution to the production activities of les Films Balenciaga (1993-2001), which he joined as General Manager, includes
- A Couch in New York, directed by CHANTAL AKERMAN and starring Juliette Binoche and William Hurt,
- first-time director JOELLE BENTOLILA's The Maze, with Sally Kellerman, Giancarlo Esposito and Richard Lewis, who was in Slamdance Festival.
- The reconstruction of the 1942 unfinished film by Orson WELLES, It's all true, directed by Richard WILSON, Bill KROHN and Myron MEISEL. The cult movie premiered at the New York Film Festival in 1993.
His other productions include Man is a Woman starring Antoine de Caunes and Elsa Zylberstein, directed by JEAN-JACQUES ZILBERMANN. The film opened in France on March 11th 1998 with one of the three best figures in the domestic box-office. Then came Cuisine Americaine, directed by JEAN-YVES PITOUN, starring Eddy Mitchell, Irene Jacob and Jason Lee; The Last Harem, directed by FERZAN OZPETEK, starring Marie Gillain; and Inseparables by MICHEL COUVELARD, starring Catherine Frot and Jean-Pierre Darroussin.
His last films as a producer for les Films BALENCIAGA were Eden based on a novel by Arthur Miller, directed by Amos GITAI, starring Samantha Morton, Danny Huston and Thomas Jane, that premiered in Venice Film Festival in 2001 and, as a French co-producer, Le Fate Ignoranti, by Ferzan OZPETEK , that premiered in Berlin 2001 and was one of the top films at the Italian box-Office (over 2 million admissions).
In 2001, he established his own production film company OF2B Productions, and in 2005 OF2B Editions, a DVD publishing company that has released ten titles as of today.
As a French co-producer, OF2B has coproduced:
- Aaltra by Benoit DELEPINE & Gustave KERVERN with LA PARTI PRODUCTION (2003). The film was acclaimed in a lost of festivals and has been significantly acquired worldwide
- Belhorizon by Ines RABADAN with NEED Productions (2005).
In 2006, OF2B has also completed Komma, a first feature written and directed by Martine DOYEN, that premiered at Cannes Crirics' Week 2006 and a 90 minutes feature documentary by Euzhan PALCY, The Dissidence, that renders justice to the young resistants from the french West Indies during WWII.
He was represented in the 2006 edition of the Locarno Film Festival with another 90 minutes documentary by Laurent PERRIN, that was made for the french TV Channel Cine-Cinema. In 2007 he produced another film by Laurent PERRIN Dominique LAFFIN, Portrait d'une enfant pas sage, a documentary on the late french actress Dominique LAFFIN.
In 2007/2008 Ormieres works as executive producer for Dorothy, by Agnes MERLET (Son of a Shark, Artemisia) produced by FIDELITE Films in Paris and OCTAGON Films in Dublin, with the support of the Irish Film Board, that has been released in france in august 2008.
He is coproducer for The Last Station, by US director Michael HOFFMANN, that is scheduled to premiere in the next issue of the Toronto International Film Festival.
He currently exec produces White, White World, by Serrbian director Oleg NOVKOVIC, the principal photography of which has started. He also is in preproduction for The Last Furlong, the next feature by Agnes MERLET . He is also currently developing the first feature film by Claire VASSE and Christophe BEAUVAIS, Ma cousine Jeanne.
The DVD label has released:
- a boxed set of 3 documentary films, entitled SOUTH AFRICA, from apartheid to reconciliation
- in coproduction with JMJ Productions (Euzhan PALCY's company) a boxed set of a 3 hours documentary and a book dedicated to the life and works of Aime CESAIRE.
As Artistic Director for MOONSTONE INT'L SCREEN LABS from 2002 to 2007, he was instrumental in designing and implementing the development of the Organization in continental Europe. The Leipzig outpost opened successfully in 2004, with the support of MDM Film Foederung.
His experience as a Producer has made him travel and work in many countries in and outside Europe, such as the United States, Russia, Israel, the West indies and North and sub-saharian Africa. He is familiar with various types of feature film production from low budget indies to higher scale ones (from 7 to 15 million dollars) distributed by french or European "majors" such as UGC or Polygram. His practice of English, German and Italian is fluent.
