John MarshallInternational Media Consultant / Head of Studies SWIM in the Digital World
John Marshall is a consultant, analyst and adviser in the field of international media financing, production and distribution.
He has given workshops in many parts of the world, including Canada, Australia, France, Spain, Scandinavia, Russia and the UK. He is managing director of Docos Limited, a leading commercial consultancy for the international television and audio-visual industries. Current clients include broadcasters, film archives, production companies, NGOs and training agencies world-wide. The company also has significant experience in high-end professional training.
Recently Marshall was appointed as a Government International Trade Adviser for the UK media industries and is Adviser to a 5 million euros production investment fund for the east of England, covering digital, film and television.
Starting as a journalist writing about media issues, Marshall went on to become a successful documentary producer and writer for the UKs BBC and Channel 4. He was also a television war reporter for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva. Marshall has been Secretary General of the European Union's documentary agency, which was part of the MEDIA 1 Programme, based in Copenhagen. Following this he became Director of Documentary development for MEDEA, based in Seville, Spain, during the course of which he worked intensively in assisting Mediterranean producers. He helped create the pitching formula for The Amsterdam FORUM and both moderates and instructs at the annual MEDIMED pitching forum in Sitges, Spain.
Marshall sits by invitation on the boards of the following bodies: International History Producers Congress, Canadian International Documentary Conference (Hot Docs), Australian International Documentary Conference, Canadian Documentary Studio. He is a Board member of the East of England Innovation and Production Centre (EPIC) in Norwich, England and a member of the Steering Committee of Games Eden, a professional organisation for the computer games industry in Cambridge, England.
