Looking back to what the SWIM Consortium has done since 2008 makes us dizzy.
The SWIM Consorium ?
A group of higher education Institutions composed of Sciencescom-Audencia, Fr, Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj, Ro, University of the Arts, Berlin, San-Jorge University, Zaragoza not forgetting Westerdals School of Communication, Oslo and the Norwich University College of the Arts, UK.

All of us were sharing a similar vision of the Digital Word coming up, and the huge changes that it brings with it.

With the support of the MEDIA programme of the European Union, we have had the fantastic opportunity to design, plan and implement a training workshop- the SWIM seminar- based on interactions and multicultural dimensions through the rich mix of students, tutors and professionals.

Not only discussions, but a real work sessions provided through 12 creative cases studied on site and presented before pitch juries.

SWIM in a few figures : 3 training seminars : SWIM08, SWIM09, SWIM2010, 3 host towns : Nantes, Cluj-Napoca, Zarogoza, 121 student participants, 74 tutors, lecturers, researchers, speakers and staff, not forgetting the dozens of messages from the participants, proud to have been there. To all of you, to all of our supporters, be sure we’ll remain close to you through the SWIM network, Facebook and other social networks.

Be sure we’ll try to help you in your search for jobs or internships in the audiovisual sector.

Be sure the SWIM spirit will remain alive, active and inspired for a long time.

Surf the digital wave in the third edition of the SWIM in the Digital World seminar! Join us in this lecturing adventure that will take place this year in Spain, between the 27th of May and the 13th of June. The courses will be held in Zaragoza, “city of the water”, and will be coordinated with the celebration of Huesca Cinema Festival, close to the town.

Founded by Caesaraugusto in the expansion of the Roman Empire, the history of Zaragoza has been richly growing thanks to the links with the different civilizations of the Hispanic territory. Now, it is a proud European city, open to the multicultural experience, as it was proved being the stage for the last International Exposition in 2008. Currently, the town is fighting for becoming the next European Cultural Capital in 2016.

More than 40 students from 12 European countries will attend the SWIM 2010 seminar, accompanied by highly-experienced professionals in lectures, case analyses, debates and tours over the monumental places in the region.

The seminar is co-organized by Sciencescom (Nantes, France) and San Jorge University (Zaragoza), Audiovisual Communication Department, under the supervision of the SWIM Consortium that also includes: Audencia School of Management in Nantes, Universitatea Babes-Bolyai of Cluj-Napoca and Universitat der Künste in Berlin. The whole event is supported by the MEDIA Programme of the European Community.

First two editions of SWIM in the Digital World seminar were celebrated in France and Romania with a big success. The third stop in this way to the digital future is now waiting for you in Zaragoza!

Located at www.natochannel.tv, NATO-tv opened on 2 April 2008.

The channel is an example of how many organisations are using digital technology in the realm of public diplomacy, influencing opinion and thereby building support for the organisation’s objectives and actions.

Such activity is not restricted to government bodies or international organisations such as NATO or UNDP. Similar techniques are employed by charitable bodies such as Greenpeace, Oxfam and Amnesty and commercial corporations such as Volkswagen and Airbus.

The purpose of this Case Study is to examine the objectives of NATO-tv, its ways of working in the digital universe and the effectiveness of its operations. As a Case it can therefore be analysed on a number of levels: technical, journalistic, commercial, demographic and cultural, for example.

The aim is not to express a political view of NATO ort NATO-tv but to examine whether its objectives are coherent and are achieved through effective use of digital technology within the available budget.

NATO-tv represents a genuinely new direction for public diplomacy in that the internet offers an unique opportunity to communicate unmediated news and values direct to audiences.

When NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen launched the channel at a NATO Summit in Bucharest, they said it was, “Meant to improve understanding of the Alliance roles, operation and missions.”

The channel is the result of close cooperation between the NATO Public Diplomacy Division and the Danish Government to improve the way the Alliance communicates its work and image to the general public.

“When it comes to video, we are frankly in the stone age. NATO has no ability to gather video from the field to show people what is happening,” the NATO Secretary General said during a seminar on public diplomacy in NATO-led operations in Copenhagen in October 2007. The channel aims to help address that challenge.

The Danish government provided NATO with a video production facility, two camera teams and an internet-based TV channel on NATO’s home page.

The Danish Prime Minister stressed the importance of communication to the public on NATO’s operation in Afghanistan. “We owe it to the many men and women in NATO operations, as well as their families to show the results and challenges of their work in mission areas,” he said.

The NATO channel also aims to provide regular news updates and video reports from the different regions where NATO is engaged. Footage is also available in broadcast quality for journalists and media networks to download.

ARAGONESE AUDIOVISUAL POLICY

Despite being one of the major Spanish economic powers, the presence of the audiovisual sector has been virtually nonexistent until the late 90s. A very large delay if we compare it with other Spanish regions such as Catalonia, the Basque country or Galicia. In addition, there has been no development of audiovisual legislation that would allow the proper development of the audiovisual industry.

Finally, in 2005, a Broadcasting Corporation introduces the first regional television and radio: Aragon TV and Radio.

The appearance of the audiovisual sector CARTV revolutionizes the corporation and enables the birth of over 50 companies dedicated to creating content for this new outlet.

In addition, the Aragonese Government began its momentum in several directions to administer the sector:

- Audiovisual Training for Business : Aragon Audiovisual Draft

- Support for the creation of audiovisual companies

- Audiovisual training-courses for students

- Training Centers : CPA, CTA, Universidad San Jorge

In 2009, the Aragonese Government decided that the audiovisual industry must be a key factor in the regional economy and started to invest in new TV and Film technologies. These are some of its initiatives :

- Investment in New TV Tech : DVB, HDTV, IPTV, 3D

- Birth of Audiovisual and New Media Research Centre (Walqa, Huesca)

- Launch of 3D-TV

- Creation of a Film Festival devoted to 3D and Digital Cinema

- New Film and TV funding policy : TV and Film own Production (as is the case of Galicia and Catalonia).

A European business school… for the world

Audencia’s quality as an international management school is today recognised as much in the academic world as it is by business, with:

- an ever growing international vocation,
- a strong relationship with companies,
- teaching that places the acquisition of general culture at its heart to give alumni the rounded, long term vision needed for management.

Our students, company contacts and our partners trust us. They recognise that our belief in self-development will ensure that Audencia remains a European business school for the world, resolutely humanist and modern – the keys to its success.
True to its origins and to its mission.

A management school straddling the academic and business worlds

Audencia Nantes School of Management is a centre for research and teaching in management with an ever-growing international profile. Among schools in France, Audencia is regularly ranked as one of the leading ‘Grandes Ecoles de Management.’

Welcoming just over 2000 students on its wide palette of programmes, the management school’s portfolio ranges from post-graduate studies to specially developed programmes followed by high-level executives. The student population is made up of more than 40 different nationalities.

Audencia is one of an elite group of international business schools accredited by the three key international bodies: Equis from the EFMD – European Foundation for Management Development, the AACSB – Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and the Association of MBAs (AMBA).

Today, no one can question the reality of the digital revolution. Professionals of the audiovisual industry live with it every day in their different businesses. It is no longer the event that certain hoped for and others feared. It is part of the business environment because we have entered the age of the digital society.

From this shared and dynamic vision between professors of partners schools and universities, the SWIM Consortium was born and has developed since its Nantes France seminar in 2008 and its Cluj, Romania seminar in 2009, with the steady support of the MEDIA Programme of the European Union.

The SWIM training action has already given over 75 students from France, Germany, Romania, Spain, Italy, Hungary, etc the opportunity to seriously work together on real problems in the European audiovisual arena arising from the digital revolution under the supervision of lecturers and professionals closely involved in this issue.

40 students are expected to take part in the third edition of the SWIM in the Digital World seminar, from 27 May to 13 June 2010, in Zaragoza, Spain.

Professors, lecturers, tutors from San Jorge University in Zaragoza, the Berlin University of Arts, The Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj, Audencia Nantes School of Management, Wersterdals School of Communication and many others, in collaboration with professionals will work on the selected creative cases : digital projection, 3D cinema, WebTV, crowdfunding, and regional digital strategies will be on the cards !

We are striving to create a seminar of exception, a complete immersion with an intense and unique intercultural dimension.

Don’t hesitate, come and join us for such an exciting experience !
